Pet Product Concept Review Checklist

A new pet product concept needs a clear brief before it can become a quoted specification. Use this checklist to separate requirements you have already decided from questions that still need drawings, material samples or a prototype.

Define the Intended Product and User

State the product family, intended animal and use, destination market and sales channel. Describe the problem the design should address in observable terms, such as a different entry layout, size range, carrying format or packaging requirement. Avoid using a reference photograph as the only specification.

Separate Fixed Requirements from Design Options

• Fixed requirements: list the dimensions, essential functions, quantity assumptions, packaging constraints and required product documentation that the review must address.
• Options to compare: identify alternative fabrics, boards, hardware, colors, surface finishes or layouts. State which choices can change after sample review.
• Unknowns: record missing measurements, performance evidence, drawings or instructions and who will provide each item.

Show What Changes from the Reference

If the project starts with an existing model, give its item number and mark each requested change on a drawing or annotated photo. A color change, a new component and a different structural layout should be listed separately because they can require different sample work and production review.

These are ways to describe a request, not records of completed custom projects.

Agree on the Next Review Decision

Ask which requirements can be evaluated from the written brief, which need a sample or drawing, and what information is missing before quotation. Confirm any design ownership, permitted use of reference files and confidentiality terms before sharing proprietary material.

Record the proposed sample purpose and acceptance questions rather than treating a concept image as production approval. A concept may need further development; feasibility, cost and timing are reviewed for the selected scope.
